for Gwenifer Raymond

★★★★★ ‘…a profound talent.’ The Guardian        ★★★★ ‘an immersive debut’ The Observer

8/10 ‘…stunningly confident, in full possession of its art’ Uncut

‘…raw, virtuosic…’ Mojo

Gwenifer Raymond is a Welsh multi-instrumentalist, She started out playing in punk bands before she discovered the blues of Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James, which led her to the world of John Fahey, and the discovery that a solo acoustic guitar could become a band in itself. She has since been playing her own moody and often-times manic original American Primitive styled compositions on guitar and banjo .

“Just about anybody with an interest in the new school of American primitive will tell you that Welsh guitarist Gwenifer Raymond is one of its most promising proponents. “I’ve been blown away by Gwenifer Raymond,” says Jeff Conklin. Josh Rosenthal agrees: “She’s just a fascinating person—a great example of somebody taking the raw elements [of the style] and making them more personal.” – BandCamp Daily

“Its intricate folk melody is Welsh and Celtic in style but American Old West in practice. The rhythmic patterns mimic the swift dynamics of a fiddle with a country twang. Western music was originally influenced by traditional folk music from England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland; Raymond’s seamless crossover grows from these historically intersecting roots.” – Stereogum

ALULA DOWN

Alula Down is an experiment in folk song and minimalism, with voice and with instruments made of wood & reeds. They part of the thriving Weirdshire community of active “brethren” of musicians and artists in Herefordshire.

“Alula Down conjure their vision with fields of minimalist sonic repetition and tell whispered tales of the people who wander by. Homespun invites the listener into their peculiarly mapped out space of Weirdshire and it proves difficult to leave in a hurry.”Stewart Gardiner, Concrete Islands

“Homespun is a vital and vibrant contribution to this creative and fertile scene, moreover it stands alone as a significant and striking psych folk release in its own right” Grey Malkin, MOOF magazine

It is the duo project of Mark Waters & Kate Gathercole, longtime players in Heed the Thunder, Sproatly Smith, Vaginapocalypse and with Nick Duffy (the Lilac Time, Bait, We are Muffy).

“This is a quintessentially Weirdshire album on which the instruments enchant and Gathercole’s voice beguiles. As gorgeous a slice of gently euphoric pastoral psychedelia as has been heard in many’s the long year.”fRoots, Winter 2018
